これは私の故郷です。両親の家は東京の郊外、国分寺市にあります。羽村から新宿まで43kmに亘って流れる玉川上水には、物心付いた頃から親しんできました。五才の頃から小学校低学年までは三鷹市で、次いで十代後半から二十代半ばまでは国分寺市で、結婚後十年余りは世田谷区の北烏山で、いずれも上水までは歩いていける距離でした。今もさほど遠くないところにいます。時々母や弟の家族を訪ねて国分寺へ行くと、必ず上水縁を歩きます。とりわけ五月には、木々も草も新緑にもえ、目の覚める鮮やかさに包まれます。上水の水は深い緑の木陰を静かに流れてゆきます。（昔、この上水の水が実際に生活用水として使われていた-1950年代-頃は、激しい急流で子供心にも怖ろしい川でしたが。）

ここの花の写真は殆どが母の庭で撮影したものです。小さなつくばいも、石仏も生前父が自分で彫ったものです。茶室前の小庭を始め、造園が父の最大の趣味でした。このあたりに住む人々は自然環境を大切にしています。「玉川上水を守る会」というのもあります。実用を終えてから一時は枯れて荒れ果てる運命にあった玉川上水に清流（実際は下水処理水）を呼び戻したのは地元の人々です。若い頃私はこの上水縁を散策するのを習慣としていました。さまざまなことを考えながら、木々の間を歩くのは最高の贅沢でした。今も戻る場所がある幸福を感じます。

This is where I am from. My parents' house is located in the suburbs of Tokyo, Kokubunji. The man-made waterway Tamagawa-Josui is running from Hamura to Shinjyuku (43km). My life has been close to the stream since I was five: I was brought up in Mitaka, spent my youth in Kokubunji, got married to live in kitakarasuyama, Setagaya; all in a walking distance from Tamagawa-Josui, and now I'm in a place not very far from it. I visit my mother and brother's family in Kokubunji once in a while. My homecoming is always connected with Tamagawa-Josui. Especially in May, the waterway is brilliant with fresh green leaves and grasses. The quiet water runs through the green shade.

Most of the flowers in this page grow in my mother's garden. The small tea-garden with stone engravings was built by my father while he was alive. Gardening was his greatest pleasure. In the suburbs of Tokyo, people have been living with respect for their rich natural environment. They are making efforts to preserve the precious heritage. I feel most at home walking along Tamagawa-Josui, which is a habit of my life I obtained in my youth. My happiness is to have a place to return and remember all the way I've come along.
