東京が埼玉県と接する東村山市、隣の小平市、西東京市（旧田無市）などを貫通する道路がある。「多摩湖自転車歩行者道」と言う。「狭山・境公園緑道」とサイクリングロードが平行して一体となった遊歩道で、東京都の説明に寄れば「多摩湖から境浄水場までの水道管を布設した道路を緑化したのが、狭山・境緑道です。現在は、西東京市から東大和市までの10.5kmにわたって開園しています」とのこと。（詳しくはこちらをご参照ください。）東村山市の西武鉄道「萩山駅」はこの道路に面している。地元住民は老いも若きもよくこの道をぶらぶらする。沿道には武蔵野の雑木林、畑や造園林などの生産緑地、学校、公園、墓地、住宅が続き、季節ごとに草花・樹木が楽しめる。とりわけ春の桜、梅雨時のあじさい、秋の萩を始め、冬枯れの木々も関東地方ならではの景観を見せてくれる。木々のうっそうと茂る玉川上水緑道に比べると、見晴らしがよく明るい。それぞれの趣でふたつの道はごく近くを平行に走っている。三月の風はまだ冷たいが、四月からこの緑道を自転車で高校に通うという娘について、西から東へと数キロ走ってみた。いずれ桜のトンネルができる頃にもまた出かけよう。

There is a road going though several cities in the west of Tokyo. It is called "Tama Lake Cycling-Walking Road." Tokyo Mnicipal Government explains it as "Under the road is laid down the water pipe which runs from Tama Lake to Sakai Water Purification Plant. It provides the green area of 10.5 km from Nishi-Tokyo City to Higashi Yamato City." (For more information, please click HERE.) Hagiyama Station of Seibu Railway Company is facing this road. All the generation of the residents in the city enjoy walking and cycling on the road. Along it are woods, vegetable fields, horticultural farms, schools, parks, a cemetery, and of course houses. You can find plants of the seasons. Particularly cherry blossoms in spring, hydorangea in the rainy season, Japanese bush clover in autumn, and bare trees in winter which are very characteristc of Kanot District, are extremely beautiful. Compared to Tamagawa-Jousui Path with dense plantation, this one is open and bright. These paths are going paralell with charms of their own respectively. Although the wind in March was still cold, it was exhiralating to cycle eastward following my daughter who would start going to high school via the path in April. I would like to tread it again when cherry blossom is in full bloom.

地形の関係で土手を設けて水道管を埋蔵してある箇所がある。この土手には自転車は侵入できない。/ There is a bank under which the water pipe is buried. Bicycles cannot go on it.

「郁李（にわうめ）の花」もしくは「林鐘梅（りんしょうばい）」。「こうめの花」とも。/ Cerasus japonica (Thunb.) Loisel.

葉よりも先に出てきた木五倍子（きぶし）の花。/ Stachyurus praecox Siebold et Zucc.

この黄色い花の咲く木は山茱萸（さんしゆゆ）。/ A tree with yellow flowers: corni fructus.(Cornus officinalis Siebold et Zucc) flowers, I'm not sure now!
